Zakopane is also known as the winter capital of Poland, since it is the biggest city directly surrounded by the Tatra Mountains and, at the same time a big winter sports centre. It is also a city located on the highest elevation in Poland, with a large part of the Tatra National Park located within the city administrative borders.

In the centre of Zakopane, surrounded by 3 Maja Avenue and Sienkiewicza, Nowotarska and Witkiewicza Streets, the Równia Krupowa Park can be found. The idea of creating a park in the city centre was first proposed in the late 19th century. After many years and changes in the area development plans, the area of Równia Krupowa almost entirely managed to avoid being built-up. The WIOSNA Apartments, located at Nowotarska 31 (previously Villa Świetlana) are located directly next to the lower part of Równia Krupowa. From the windows of Wiosna 3 one can see the Red Mountains (Czerwone Wierchy), Giewont, Kasprowy Wierch, Nosal, Świnica and a beautiful panorama of the Tatra Mountains.

Nowotarska Street is a part of the ancient settler road, leading from the city of Nowy Targ – that is where its name came from. However, in contrast to Kościeliska Street, not many original highlander houses remained on Nowotarska Street. Many of the stylish houses are old villas and guesthouses, built in the late 19th century, usually by newcomers to the city.

Willa "Świetlana" is one of the oldest preserved buildings in Zakopane, built in the third quarter of the 19th century. Currently, thanks to its owners’ efforts, a comprehensive renovation is taking place in order to restore the villa to its original splendour (photographs from 1895 and 1901 can be seen in our Gallery).
